Difference Between ‘Should’ And ‘Had Better’ | Wabs Talk

Jack: Obesity has become a very common disease among people.I think we should rely on homemade food only.
Johny: I think you are right,I have even put on 5kgs within two months.I had better cut on junk and fried food.

In the above conversation ‘should’ and ‘had better’ have been used differently.The question that if they have any difference or they can be used interchangeably has left us with our head scratched. In this article we will understand the difference between ‘should’ and ‘had better’.

Difference Between Should and Had Better

Should:
It is a modal verb that has more than one meaning.
It is used to give advice or give an opinion.
Example: You look tired.You should go to bed.
Example: You should join Wabs Talk to improve your communication skills.

It is also used when something is expected to happen.
Example:
She is actively participating in debates,group discussion so she should clear the group discussion round easily.

We can use should after a number of verbs especially:
suggest,propose,recommend,insist,demand.
Example: My friend insisted that I should accompany her for movie.
Example: My gym trainer suggested that I should cut on my sugar.

We can use ‘should’ after a number of adjectives,especially:
strange
old
funny
typical
natural
interesting
surprised
Example:Ā It’s strange that he should be late.He’s usually on time.

Had better:
We use had better to refer to the present or the future, to talk about actions we think people should do or which are desirable in a specific situation.
Example:Itā€™s five oā€™clock. Iā€™d better go now before the traffic gets too bad.

Example:Ā The democratic movement had better concentrate on the immediate issues of the economy and security. (more formal)

Had better is a strong expression. We use it if we think there will be negative results if someone does not do what is desired.
Example:Ā Itā€™s five oā€™clock. Iā€™d better go now for the Public Speaking Session before I miss the presentation tips.

Example:Ā The democratic movement had better concentrate on the immediate issues of the economy and security. (more formal)

Had better is a strong expression. We use it if we think there will be negative results if someone does not do what is desired or suggested:

Example:Ā Iā€™d better reach the auditorium on time on the day of Public Speaking Championship else I will miss the motivational speech by Mr.Reuben Singh(CEO Wabs Talk)
