How should you Write?| Writing Skills

Write with nouns and verbs
If I say “Taj Mahal” you can visualize it.Ā  Likewise, if you say “Sensex soared” you can visualize the index rising rapidly. Both nouns and verbs help you paint pictures with your writing- pictures that the reader can visualize.

  • Adverbs can also be used.
For instance: scorching Sun, blazing ļ¬re, etc
  • Avoid too many nouns as it makes your writing heavy and diļ¬ƒcult to read.
Do not use nouns that express a concept. Instead, use verbs for the same. Explanation with an example:
With noun: The common reaction is incredulous laughter.
With verb: Most people laugh with disbelief.
The sentences with nouns expressed as a concept don’t have any persons in them. They don’t have any working verbs either. The sentences with people in and verbs are better to read. Learn the usage of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs for creative writing in the Essential Grammar module of our writing skills and English Speaking courses, Delhi.
  • Use adjectives carefully
    1. Avoid vague adjectives.
For instance, precise statements would be stating “overspent by 1 lakh” instead of “very overspent” or “one day late” instead of slightly behind schedule”.

    2. Use Vigorous adjectives
    a. These can sharpen your point.
    b. Instantly accepted.
    c. Baļ¬„ing instructions.
    d. Crisp presentation.
    e. Tiresome speech

    3. Don’t be verbose
Bulk is not beautiful. In this context, it is appropriate to remember Alexander Pope who wrote, “Words are like leaves; and where they abound most, much fruit of sense is rarely found. “Readers don’t have time to read lengthy tomes. They need to know and know quickly.

    4. Utilize others’ experience
If you can give examples that the reader can relate to, it will capture his imagination and make him interested in what you have to say.
    5. Make it logical
If the structure is unclear, it is diļ¬ƒcult to understand. Ensure one idea leads onto the next.

    6. Repetition
You should not repeat a sentence again and again but it helps if examples are given. Graphs and summarization help as do the giving of examples.

    7. Don’t overkill

Once you have made a point, explained it then move on.

    8. Start with the main point
People don’t have time to read ten pages to ļ¬nd out what you are trying to say. Start with the main point. The reader then knows what he is going to read.
    9. Make writing visually appealing
If the writing is visually appealing the reader would read on. This can be by diagrams, quotation marks, question marks, numbers and dashes.

    10. Use Active voice
The active voice is usually more direct and vigorous than the passive. People relate to it as it is the way one talks.
